After saying our goodbyes to Lupita, Danilo and Camila we were off on our journey to Katrineholm. Originally our plan had been to head to Orebro however there had been some unrest in the area and clashes with police, and we also wanted to find ourselves somewhere with a sauna. So instead I managed to find a nice Airbnb apartment where we could rent our own private wood-fired sauna.
The journey to Katrineholm was lovely. We did the first hour on the motorway which actually made leaving Stockholm painless. It was blustery but still sunny. Our only stop for the day was after about an hour at Gripsholm castle. The castle stood tall and proud on the edge of a lake, the sun glimmering on the water- making it look like something out of a film. After a quick wander and admiring the view we hopped back onto the bike to finish the ride.
The sun was shining and we both enjoyed riding through the Swedish countryside- lots of forests, red or yellow wooden houses, horses. We arrived in a small suburban complex, of modern Swedish houses and found our apartment at the end of the block. It was very picturesque and we had a nice balcony over looking the bathing lake nearby. After walking to the shop and back to get groceries, we managed to convince ourselves that it was our only time we were likely going to get the chance to go in a bathing lake in Sweden where our accomodation was close by and it was sunny enough… so that was what we did.
In the early evening, the sun was still shining, so we got changed and made our way to the small jetty which had a ladder to dip into the lake. After feeling the water it took about 20 minutes for us both to convince ourselves to do it. But we both managed to brave the cold water a good few times each- slowly making our way down to our shoulders. It was definitely invigorating and you felt alive afterwards! We were both glad of a hot shower and a hot meal to warm up afterwards though.
In the evening as the sun was setting we stumbled over to our little private wood-fired sauna on the back of a trailer. Dave got the fire going and we relaxed for a good few hours in there- it was bliss. Finally too hot and the fire dying down we headed back to the shower to rinse off and to sleep.
In the morning we were off to another place in the middle of nowhere in Sweden, this time to find our own swimspa!
Thanks
Alex
