After another terrible night of sleep in Prague we were glad to be leaving our apartment/the hostel. We were up and ready to leave at 10am as we had a long 4 and ½ hour journey to Brno. We managed to escape Prague city after about 30 minutes. Although the tourist old town area is relatively small, the actual city of Prague is surprisingly big! We stopped briefly at a fuel station and then took a short detour to a castle I had seen on google maps nearby. It was worth the detour as it looked very fairytale-like and was sat on the banks of a lake. From here we took back roads through some lovely countryside again.
We had planned on stopping at Zeliv monastery to check that out on the way but missed the turning and decided just to carry on. Shortly down the road we stopped at an archway bridge to take some pictures. The next hour of driving was very scenic through forest before we stopped in a larger town at a Tesco. Thankfully this gave us a chance to use the bathroom, grab some lunch and have a walk around to warm up. Although the weather had majorly held out the wind had got cold when travelling at speeds.
After another hour and a half of lovely driving but busy roads with lots of trucks, we stopped at a Penny to grab items for dinner and breakfast and then found our apartment in Brno. We had a lovely modern apartment through airbnb in the suburbs of Brno. The owner let us park our bike inside the main door too which is nice.
We quickly got ready, wanting to stretch our legs after a long journey and to see a bit of the town before dark. We were only a 10 minute walk to the nearest tram stop, so after a few minutes of trying to figure out how we buy tickets/ if we could pay with card (yes just tap to check in and out of the tram with a contactless card) we hopped on the tram 4 into the city centre. 20 minutes later and we were in the heart of Brno.
The old town/ main centre of Brno is not very big and due to us getting there later the main things to do there were shut. But we had a good mooch and got a feel for the place. It had gorgeous old architecture still like Prague but this was mixed in with new shops. It felt much more lived in than Prague, with a lot of younger people and some really cool shops/restaurants. We both said we could come back for a little weekend away here to do some of the things we missed this time- like Europe’s 2nd largest ossuary, the labyrinth underneath the city and Puncva caves nearby, as well as to be able to afford to eat and drink in the good looking places. Instead we hopped back on the tram to the apartment to have some microwave rice and chill. We got back just in time before the heavens opened, the first real time we have had rain since leaving the UK. We were hoping this wasn’t a sign for things to come, but at least for now we were inside and dry!
Next on from here we are heading to Slovakia!
Thanks
Alex
