Seremban itself does not have many sights, but there are a few various things around it and day trips about 45 minutes away. There are also a number of hiking areas around so we spent an afternoon looking at what was around that we wanted to do whilst we were here.
After a few days exploring some local sights we realised that as we were at our housesit for the 5 weeks that we needed to do things a bit slower- having some days to relax and read, or to start sorting our plans for after our stay. This was fine with us and meant that a lot of mornings we could take it slowly, have coffee on the outside sofa whilst reading and then go to do some bits in the afternoon. It also gave us time to work on videos and blogs around sightseeing.
One afternoon we tried to go to a local hiking area I had found on All Trails, however when we got there there was a clear sign saying no parking on the road leading to it and we didn’t really have anywhere else to park. Determined to have a bit of a walk, even if it wasn’t a hike we went back to the S2 Hill park that we failed to get into the other day. In midday heat walking up the hill made us into a sweaty mess but the park was quiet with a few small trails, some good views and randomly enough a whole bunch of plastic dinosaurs! Of course we had to have a little photoshoot with them. With the sky getting darker we sat and had a picnic of baked pork buns and other various snacks enjoying the fresh air. Where there are all the new housing estates there are lots of these nice small parks to encourage people to get outside and give them somewhere to exercise. Almost all of them ban dogs, it is not a common thing to see a dog being walked here and when we were taking Coco out to her little pond park we would often get a variety of looks- children either enjoyed seeing her or were scared and locals just looked at us bemused. Very different to the UK where parks are often the place to walk dogs. We continued our trend of trying local foods in the evening, ordering a biryani, extra veg and a beef murtabak washed down with a cheap local Anchor beer.
The next day we wanted to actually head into Seremban City. After navigating the busy roads to get there a little better this time we had to circle around the one way system until we found a parking spot. Our main reason for heading in is that Alicica and Ryan had told us about a local coffee shop- Wong Fook Kopitam serving traditional butter coffee. We found the shop which had a cute backroom with tables in it and ordered a butter coffee each (2.5 MYR). It was exactly as described- a strong coffee with a lump of butter in it. But it melted as we stirred them and it was luxurious. Not soemthing you want a lot as you could literally feel you arteries clogging as you drank it! The coffee shop itself did some food but there were also some other stalls in the entrance that you could order food from and have it at the table. We ordered some char siew bao buns (3.40 MYR for 2) as well as a signature curry chee cheong fun and a sweet chill sauce version. These looked and sounded intriguing and we hadn’t heard or seen them before. They are rolled rice noodles. The curry version had long strips and the sweet sauce one had them chopped up so they had a bouncy texture. It was all delicious and definitely a dish I would order again. Plus for 2.40 MYR a dish it was the perfect cheap lunch for us.
We had a bit of a wander around Seremban town which had a more gritty vibe than the areas near Seremban 2. Lots of shops for different things, lots of hainanese cheap chicken restaurants but interesting to walk around and to take pictures of. Lorong Seni is also an art street decorated with lots of different paintings from different artists. Definitely an attempt to be a bit more Penang like for tourists but the artwork was impressive. In the evening we attempted to cut Dave's hair with his clippers- which was definitely an experiment but we got it looking alright in the end. After having no vegetables all day, we cooked dinner for ourselves so we could fill it with veg.
We had a quiet mainly house day the next day- we decided which country we wanted to go to after Malaysia and spent time looking at things we could do there- always exciting! To get out for a bit we got lunch from Centrio. We fancied a different type of flavour so went to a middle eastern restaurant called Belquis for lamb and chicken wraps (11 MYR each). It was nice to have different spices. In the evening we went to check out one of the recommended bars- The Loft and as it was a Friday we treated ourselves to ice cold beers (17 MYR). The loft had a nice atmosphere open at the top so you could watch the sunset however there were about 10 staff milling around just watching us. For dinner we went back to Daniya and after having a beer both fancied tandoori and naan again. Theirs was even more delicious than the one we had the other day (10 MYR each). Back at the house we had a few more beers and played darts (something I have never really done before). It was a challenge getting them in the board and then also mentally challenging trying to work out how much I had got! Fun though and a nice way to mark our first weekend at the housesit.
By the end of these few days Coco had definitely warmed up to us. She started seeking us out for tickles, starting coming upstairs in the evening to sleep in her bed and we started to get a lot more wags. She also began doing her happy, excited dance when we came back from being out or when saying that we were coming for a walk. Always satisfying and nice to see that the dogs are happy with you!
We are going to start exploring further a field in the next blog.
Thanks
Alex
