Docks, Fish and Golden Sands in Warnemunde

We were up nice and early to have a relaxed morning before hitting the road again. Our balcony happened to be basking in the sunshine so we had breakfast out there and had a very chilled morning until I double-checked our check out time and it ended up being 10am and not 11am! So a busy 10 minutes leaving more rushed than we should have been. Thankfully we had mostly packed anyway so it was just about manageable.

It was a lovely drive through the countryside and forests of Rugen island. We then took a detour to go on smaller country roads alongside some nature reserves before stopping in Barth to pick up some lunch from Lidl. We then travelled up towards Zingst and headed along the northern coast, past lots of forests and nature reserves. There were lots of signs for stags, deers, wild boar and hedgehogs. We found a small car park and made our way to the beach on the northern coast of Germany to have some lunch. It was an absolute stunner! Pure white sand stretching for miles in either direction, complete with gorgeous wild sand dunes and crystal clear waters. If the bike gear wasn’t so annoying to take on and off I think we would have been in the sea. Instead we took in the view from a bench on the beach and ate our lunch. From there our ride was really enjoyable travelling through more countryside, as well as Rostock city and up to the docks of Warnemunde.

In Warnemunde we had booked to stay at the Dock Inn, a very cool container hostel. It had a large communal area with a bar and shared kitchen, cinema and games area and even a sauna. Our double room was in a container upstairs with views over the train station and docks looking out at the incoming cruise liners.

Once we had showered and got ourselves unpacked we headed out to explore the Alter Strom. This is the main strip in Warnemunde with nice clothes shops, holiday shops, bars and restaurants on one side and all the boats on the other offering either harbour tours or fisch brotten- fish sandwiches of all sorts of varieties. As we wandered up the promenade to the lighthouse, where we looked out over the crystal sea and watched the various sail boats and cruise liners. Warnemunde strand (beach) stretched out along the coast line full of life with people sitting on the beach or doing water sports off the coast. We made our way onto the golden soft sand and then paddled along the shore feeling the cool water on our feet. It was a gorgeous day and nice to be able to enjoy the beach without all our gear on!

After a stop at the grocery store we headed back to the hostel to chill and cook. Unfortunately when we got back there were large groups of school kids there on a residential trip that had taken over the main dining area and kitchen. We tried to wait it out in our room but it was getting late so we managed to claim a hob/kitchen space to cook surrounded by teenagers. We did get delicious pork tacos out of the chaos though at least. Dave made the most of the tables in the communal area to get on with some editing whilst I did some washing in the room, enjoying the sunset coming through our window.

The following day we had initially planned to get the train into Rostock town. But having driven through it the day before and having a quick google online we decided to save ourselves the train fare and stay in the Warnemunde area. We attempted to have a lay in but were rudely awoken at 8.30am by the fire alarm blaring. Quickly pulling on some more clothes we had to evacuate with the rest of the hostel and wait whilst 3 fire engines turned up. After a few minutes though the all clear was given and we were waved back in. Starting the day off with some drama! We headed down to the kitchen area for coffee and breakfast, with it being a lot quieter to cook in. We had a productive morning after that getting on with some editing and blogs, making the most of the hostel being quiet.

In the afternoon we went for a midday walk in the sun to find some lunch. We headed back to the Alter Strom to try a backfish brotten (fish sandwich). This is the local delicasy instead of bratwurst here. There are lots of premade ones from raw fresh fish as well as fried fish which was what we went for. Picking one at random we got small backfish brotten with garlic sauce for 4 euros- freshly fried it hit the spot. We wandered more of the small streets of the town and then grabbed an ice cream, making the most of it being hot. We went back to the hostel to carry on with some more admin for a few hours, before having an early dinner to try and beat the crowds of teenagers. Very full from our pork, rosti and salad we walked it off by going back to the beach. A beer, golden sands and clear seas to walk along to end the evening, perfection.

Back to the city and off to Hamburg in the next one.

Thanks

Alex
