Neither of us slept very well in Kalmar as the wind was blowing badly and we were also keeping an ear out for our bike to make sure it didn’t go over. We didn’t need to check out until 11 though so we made full use of this time. Our journey didn’t start the best as soon as we set off the wind was incredibly strong and as soon as we were on one of the major A roads out of the city we were being forcefully blown from all directions. It was frankly terrifying at points and Dave was stressed and being physically challenged from holding the bike. We filled the bike up after half an hour and thankfully shortly after this we came off the really busy A- road onto a quieter country road, zooming past beautiful moss covered forests with a lot less of a bluster. The initial part of the journey had taken a toll on Dave though and he wasn’t enjoying the ride. We made it to our lunch spot though after an hour and this gave him time to walk it off, chill and reset.
Our lunch spot was beautiful! I had just found a lake that was the right sort of distance to break up our journey but it was stunning. It was a bathing lake so had a small pier out over the crystal clear water, surrounding by forests. We enjoyed the view and had some lunch bathing in the sunshine on one of the small picnic benches. It was just what we needed to remember where we were and how beautiful this country is after a bad start to the journey.
After the lunch spot we had another hour to a fuel station and we road a lot more on smaller country lanes which were more enjoyable. The last 40 minutes we were more on a main road again, it was still windy but thankfully nowhere near as bad as the morning. We arrived into Ahus early afternoon, very glad to be there. We pulled up in a very quaint residential area with lots of wooden villas. We parked on the driveway of our hosts airbnb and walked passed their house into their gorgeous garden to find out airbnb- a small tiny house, in white seaside decoration. It was very cute and we had a ladder up to our loft room. It also had an attached greenhouse for sitting in the sunshine indoors surrounded by plants.
As it was our last night in Sweden we had decided we wanted to actually go out for a meal as we hadn’t done that. After the journey we also needed it. However as it was a Sunday a lot of things were shut and the place we wanted to go shut at 5pm. This meant a quick turn around, going straight out to find Ahus Bryggeri (Brewery). This small restaurant/brewery was very cool- full brewery set up on show. We ordered drinks made there- a cider and an IPA which were delicious. To accompany this we also chose a selection of smorgasbord- open sandwiches. We had a fish selection with peeled prawns, salmon that melted in the mouth and fried fish which was delicous. This came with delicious remoulade, potatoe and egg. Then we also chose a chicken mess sandwich and a roast beef one. We were very happy with our selection and it all tasted great! Not cheap, but that is why we only went out once.
To walk off our food we wandered along the harbour area, passed the home of Absolut vodka, saw the old ruins of Ahus castle and then walked through very quaint and quiet suburbs up to a very stunning Ahus beach with gorgeous white sands. We didn’t stay long as it was still quite windy and we were done. We headed to the local grocery shop to get bits for breakfast and general snacks before crashing back at the lovely tiny house for the evening.
In the morning we popped out very early to see if we could get a tyre changed at a local garage. Unfortunately it wasn’t in stock but it gave us the rest of the morning to get ready slowly and have an enjoyable breakfast in the greenhouse basking in the sun- it was wonderful. We would have stayed in that place longer as it was great but it was our last day in Sweden so we had to leave to enjoy the rest of our time there before getting the ferry that evening over to germany.
Thanks
Alex
