A hot, long journey from KL to Seremban but worth it for delicious local treats

The main reason we had come to Malaysia was because we had a 5 week long house sit in Seremban looking after a dog for a Canadian couple. So that meant we weren’t spending much time in KL and instead heading to Seremban so we could be there the day before to go through what we needed to do and everything to look after Coco and the house. However the couple we were house sitting for were working until late afternoon which meant we had time to head out and find some breakfast nearby before we started our journey.

We made sure to pack up our stuff first before breakfast so that we could eat and check out as soon as we got back. It was surprisingly difficult to find places that were open around Petaling Jaya for breakfast before 10am. After walking to a couple that were still closed we found Bubble bee cafe- specialising in bubble waffles but they also had reasonably cheap breakfast sets. It was a lovely cafes with beautiful paintings of elephants on the walls. We both had basic breakfast sets, me with a coffee, soft boiled eggs and croissant with caramel kaya jam and Dave had the same apart from having sourdough rolls instead of a croissant. It was basic but filling and a nice atmosphere for the morning, plus not too expensive (15 MYR each).

We checked out of our hostel with our luggage and walked to the nearest road to catch a Grab taxi. We were treated to chinese dragon performances at the local shrine whilst we waited. Dave had found someone that could look at his broken Ricoh camera for us over the next few weeks so they could figure out what was wrong and if it was worth repairing. The place was a 15 minute taxi ride away in a random mall/ flat tower complex. We literally waited outside a tower block and then handed his camera over to a random guy. He was very nice though and Dave said he had great reviews, it was surreal for me as I was expecting a shop!

With that done it was time for us to go to Seremban. For that we had to get another Grab to KL Sentral. Then we had to buy and get loaded Kommuter cards- specific for the Kommuter trains (30MYR- 5 each for the cards). We waited for 20 minutes in the dim underground platform with the fans barely working. It was a straight run on the train from KL Sentral to Seremban and we were looking forward to just sitting and watching the world go by in the aircon. Unfortunately as we boarded the train we realised that the carriage we were in had broken aircon and both windows were shattered. It was a hot, long train journey and we were glad when we finally arrived in Seremban. As our hosts lived in Seremban 2, not Seremban itself, we had booked the nearest reasonably priced hotel for the night and had to get another Grab there.

Our accomodation for the night was in the Rivero Boutique hotel. It sounds a lot fancier than it was. It was a basic hotel and we had the cheapest room which meant no window and very small but we still had our own bathroom and it gave us somewhere to put our stuff. It was still early afternoon and we weren’t due to hear from our hosts/meet them until 5ish. So we went out to find some food within walking distance.

We struck gold and just 2 mins walk was the s2s food court which was filled with various different cuisines and was all affordable. We grabbed a portion of wonton mee with bbq pork, always tasty (6.50 MYR) and then set about ordering a few other smaller bits- local Seremban staples like bbq pork/ chicken siew pao- these were absolutely delicious, with a filling of a sweet chutney like meat with a baked buttery pasty around it. Seremban was worth coming to just for those. For 3 MYR we also order Poh piah- this turned out to be a malaysian fresh spring roll- light thin wrapper with shredded vegetables, peanuts and a rich plum like sauce- very tasty and completely unexpected. After stuffing our faces we walked around the rest of the local area- filled with restaurants and shops. We even stumbled across a Vietnamese coffee shop inside a vape shop where we got iced coffees for 5 MYR- a hidden gem!

Whilst in the coffee shop we got a message from our hosts saying that they were running late and it was likely going to be about 7pm that they would get us and we could do a handover. So having explored the area around us we headed back to the room and chilled out watching the final Strange Things 2 hour epic! 7pm and 8pm came and went without word from the housesitters. We hadn’t had dinner at this point as initially the plan was to meet with them and then come back for dinner. Then a massive storm started outside with heavy rain and thunder- we definitely weren’t heading out in that for dinner. Eventually we heard from the hosts and them came to collect us at 9pm.

We were tired at this point but Alicia was lovely and took us around to some local areas to tell us about some food and drink places nearby. When we got to the house we met the adorable Coco who sought out lots of tickles before having a nap. Then Alicia and Ryan set about telling us all the things we needed to know about Coco and the house too. It was a whistle stop tour and very overwhelming but all questions were at least answered! About 11ish Ryan dropped us back at the hotel so we could have some much needed sleep and so they could pack ready to leave early the next morning!

We will head to our housesit in Seremban 2 in the next blog.

Thanks

Alex
